7 Ways to Avoid Tax ID Theft

Tax ID theft is a growing problem in which criminals steal your personal info, then file for a refund using your name (but their address). Here are 7 tips to help you stay safe:

  • Use an Identity Protection PIN: The IRS offers an IP PIN to help prevent tax-related identity theft. This unique six-digit number is used to verify your identity when filing your return.
  • File early: Submit your tax return as soon as possible to reduce the window of opportunity for identity thieves to file a fraudulent return in your name.
  • Secure your personal information: Keep your Social Security number and other personal info private. Only share it with trusted entities, and avoid carrying your Social Security card in your wallet.
  • Be wary of phishing scams: Do not respond to unsolicited emails, phone calls, or text messages requesting personal information. The IRS will never contact you in these ways with a demand for payment. Report suspicious emails to phishing@irs.gov3.
  • Use strong passwords: Yup, it’s the oldest advice in the world—because it works. Protect your online accounts with strong, unique passwords, and enable multifactor authentication (typically the 6-digit codes texted to you) whenever possible.
  • Monitor your accounts: Regularly check your bank accounts, credit reports, and IRS records for any unusual activity or unauthorized transactions.
  • Work with a true pro: Many tax ID scams originate when consumers save a few bucks by having a friend or unqualified “professional” handle their taxes.
